Racing Checklists, EYC Rules and Instructions

Racing checklists
Pre-race - at EYC - no later than 3:00 PM
Responsibility: Mike
- Raise burgee
- Put out two cushions for helmsman
- Stow hatch boards
- Put on sunscreen
- Move weight forward (table, extra sails, anchor)
- Put on tiller extensions
Pre-race - at EYC - crew call 5:00 PM
Responsibility: Everyone, checked by Ted
Tactician - Ted
- Turn on cell phone - check battery level
- Radio on - Scan Channel 13, 14, 16, 72
- Depth meter on
- Check currents
- Put handheld in cockpit; set it to channel 72
- Mount countdown timer in cockpit; preset to 10 minutes
- Tape up copy of the course
- Tape up course flags
- Insure we have copy of SI (sailing instructions)
- Get protest flag ready
Cockpit - Jeff
- Take lines off lifelines
- Put out all winch handles
- Set up snatch blocks, jib sheets
- Set up spinnaker guy/sheet lines
- Make crew assignments
- Main sheet, preventers, spinnaker pole foreguy
- Jib sheets for tacking
- Spinnaker sheets
- Spinnaker halliard
- Tighten backstay to tape (15+ turns)
- Set up yellow horseshoe life preserver
Foredeck - David
- Put on main halliard
- Put on 150% genoa, with sheets
- Take off bow vent
- Run spinnaker sheets/guys
On the water
Responsibility - Tactician (Ted)
- Verbal checkin with race committee
- Set prop vertical / Align motor shaft so setscrews are horizontal
- Over-trim traveller to starboard
- Compass course to start
- Find signal flags
- STOPWATCH - START TIMING
- Watch for course-change flags: Course flag is T-5 to T-1.
EYC may "dip" the course flag if no changes.
- "I" - Round the ends rule
- "L" - Come within hail
START
- Starboard tack
- Be leeward boat, as close-hauled as possible
- No buoy room rights
- Left end of start line is an obstruction
- No proper course before starting signal
- *** Figure out luffing rights
After the start
- Reset traveller to center
- Position crew to keep boat FLAT - 15 degrees
- Light air: Forward in the middle of the boat
- Moderate air: Midships on weather side
- Heavy air: Further aft on weather side
Post-race
Responsibility: Everyone (checked by Ted)
- Release backstay
- Release outhaul
- Put bow vent on
- All sailing hardware (winch handles, etc.) stowed on shelf below
- Do any dishes, clean galley
- Take off all belongings and any food or drink that you brought
- Put garbage out
Racing rules - Encinal YC
- 4.1 On-the-water communications. The Race Committee will monitor VHF
channel 72 for traffic concerning withdrawals or emergencies.
- 4.2 Changes in sailing instructions - All Yachts monitor VHF channel
72 or come within hail when flag "L" is displayed.
- 10.1 - Check-in. Yachts are required to come by and verbally check in with
the race committee. Yachts failing to check in will be scored DNS.
- 12.0 - Restricted area - Start/Finish Line. Any yacht whose
preparatory signal has not been made must stay clear of any yacht
whose preparatory signal has been made. Yachts shall not
cross the start/finish line after the preparatory signal for
the first start has been made unless they are preparing to start, starting
or finishing.
- 12.1 - Restricted area. When courses 4, 6, and 7 are used, the area between Coast
Guard Island and the four day marks ("1", "2", "4", "6") off its
western end is restricted. This area is foul with sunken wrecks.
- 16.0 - Time limit. Two hours after your start.
- 20.1 - One throwout will be allowed
